We’re going to make butterflies. There are two different ways to make a butterfly. I call them a wet method and a dry method. If you use a wet method, you get a beautiful crumpled wing like this. This is supposed to be a male butterfly, so the wings aren’t very lacy. And this one is made by dry method. I coloured it with dry food colours, making colour splotches and lacy wings. Before making a butterfly, prepare a paper template. You can draw it yourself on regular paper
Читать далееor find a template on the internet and print it. These will be our templates. We have large, medium and small wings here. Today we’re going to make a large butterfly. First, we’ll make wings for the blue butterfly. We take wafer paper. Don’t take wafer paper that is too thin, because it’s too fragile for such work. But don’t take wafer paper that is too thick either. This has medium width, I don’t know how their sizes are called. Put your template onto the wafer paper and outline it. Here, on the outer part, we soften the lines, making the wing less lacy. And we also make it larger. This will be a male butterfly. We’ll cut it and make 3 more wings like this, because we’re going to make twofold wings. And we repeat the same for the female butterfly. We cut the wing for our blue male butterfly. You can make female butterflies the same way. You can cover the whole cake with butterflies. And make a couple of flowers. Or you can do without flowers at all. Now we’ll colour these wings. Let’s start with blue colour. We need 3 brushes. One of them will be dry, for dry food colours. This one is for gel food colours. And a thin brush for the black veins. We also need wire, gauge 24. It’s thin but firm enough to hold our butterfly. We take 2 wires for each butterfly. First we make a small loop at the end of the wire. We make a loop and secure it, twisting the wire. This loop will be inside the wing. And another loop for the second wire. We made loops on both wires. Now we take a mixture of vodka and edible glue. They’re mixed one to one. And apply this mixture onto the wings. If the wafer paper is too thin, if it becomes very soft at once and starts breaking, don’t worry. Glue the wings together and let them dry. They’ll look crumpled in the end, but it’s fine, such wings look nice. I like butterflies with crumpled wings even more that butterflies with smooth wings. Make sure the wings are glued well together near the wire. We made a loop here so that the wind didn’t turn around the wire. It’ll stay put better on a loop. Now we can get down to colouring. I’ll use such whity blue colour. Use food colours you have. You can use special dust powder for sugar paste flowers, or any powdered water or fat-dispersible food colours. You can colour the wings with them perfectly well. First I’ll show you the wet method. You can take either dry or gel food colours for that. And we also need vodka. Vodka moistens the wafer paper and it becomes very soft. Make sure you colour the edges of the wing first. The edges should be darker than the main body of the wing. The colour shouldn’t fade towards the edges. Vice versa, we colour all the details made of wafer paper – wings or leaves – from the edges towards the center. This way the edges will look beautiful. Now the other side. You can make splotches of colour, you can make homogeneous colour or add some other tint. I will add black colour. Draw crooked lines, some spots with pointed tips near the edges, other ornaments you can usually find on butterflies’ wings. Make sure you use some dark colour. Black colour always looks nice. It tones down bright tints and creates a soft transition of colour. It’s highly unlikely that you manage to make both sides completely identical. So you can draw them as you like, don’t try to colour the second side the same way. The more diverse your butterfly is, the more interesting it will look on the cake. Wafer paper became really soft. Be careful not to tear it. Now we take the wing very carefully and put it onto baking paper to dry. The paper is crumpled so that the wing formed some curves. Press it against the paper so that it crumples a little. We put it onto the paper and now you can sprinkle it with some glitter if you have any. It will shimmer well where it curves. We make the second wing the same way and leave them to dry for 3 hours. Now I’ll show you the dry method. We don’t use vodka or any other liquids here. We use only dry food colours. I took too much. We do practically the same. We start applying food colour from the edges like we did before. This rule came from the dry method actually: we start colouring from the edges to the center. Years ago, when I studied making sugar paste flowers, the main colouring principle was to colour the petals moving from the edges to the center. We get some spots and colour splotches naturally, all this benefits the total look of the butterfly. We coloured the wing with dry food colour and we can also take gel food colour and add some blue tint, for example, because it will go along with the blue butterfly. You can add blue or yellow-green splotches, making a beautiful play of colours. Now we take a thin brush and black food colour. Start making the veins from the center towards the edges. The pattern here is gentler and more sophisticated because this is a female butterfly. Now we put two wings together and wind two wires together. We need to make one wire out of two. Try to work carefully not to make the wire dirty. When we put the butterfly onto the cake, we can spread the wings wider or put them closer together. We can even separate them a little to make the butterfly look more airy. This butterfly is ready. This is our blue butterfly. Its wings are crumpled and it looks exquisite. I like crumpled wings better. And we made a lilac butterfly with a dry method, so we don’t have to wait until it dries. Well, except for this joint maybe. You can put it onto the cake right away.
